Waste-To-Energy

Interest is increasing in the conversion of waste materials into energy products. If economically viable, this strategy offers the potential to create a win-win opportunity by transforming an environmental liability into marketable renewable power, transportation fuels, and other products. Usable waste types include: solid, agricultural, human and animal, industrial, and food. These and other types of waste have been converted successfully into useful end-products, including electricity, transportation fuels, industrial fuels, chemical feedstocks, and other marketable energy commodities.

Southern Research has the skills, facilities, and equipment needed to develop, modify, and demonstrate waste-to-energy processes. We offer clients a comprehensive range of capabilities from advanced waste wood and municipal solid waste (MSW) gasification to more conventional applications that use waste-derived biogas to drive combined heat and power (CHP) applications. Our additional capabilities include:

  • Focused, long-term experience pairing fuel cells, microturbines, engines, and CHP units with biogas produced by animal, human, food, and municipal solid waste decomposition and digestion processes
  • Direct combustion of waste wood in existing boilers to produce process steam, cleaning and drying of raw biogas, and various applications involving the use of MSW and landfill gas
