Multi-Component Syngas Treatment System
Southern Research has developed a Multi-Component Syngas Treatment (MCST) System for cleaning syngas to ultra-pure levels in several different applications. The MSCT system is now a patent-pending process that incorporates a complete set of syngas cleanup technologies into one compact unit.
System Components
While there are multiple configurations of the MCST system for different feedstocks, gasifiers, and end-use applications, MCST system components typically include the following:
- High-temperature tar cracking, subsequent moderate-temperature tar cracking, or lower-temperature tar cracking catalysts
- Candle-filter elements with internal sulfur-resistant tar-cracking and ammonia-cracking catalysts
- Sorbent injection upstream of the filters for sulfur, halides, HCN, and trace-metal removal on the candle filters
- Subsequent water-gas shift catalysts, additional sulfur scrubbing, and a polishing filter
Diverse Applications and Benefits
- Because of the integration and compactness of the system, as well as the potential to achieve ultra-pure syngas, the MCST system is ideal for coupling biomass gasifiers with syngas processing units and for use in other distributed generation systems.
- The MCST system has been developed to clean syngas produced from many different gasifier types, biomass types, and other fuels to a purity that is necessary for long-term use in Fischer-Tropsch fuel- and chemicals- producing units, fuel cells, and gas turbines.
- This innovative system provides the missing link between many distributed generation concepts and commercialization; it also represents a key step in advancing our country toward energy independence.
