Methane (CH4), one of the primary greenhouse gases, is emitted into the atmosphere from a variety of both human-related and natural sources. In the United States, the largest methane emissions originate from the decomposition of wastes in landfills, ruminant digestion and manure management associated with domestic livestock, natural gas and oil systems, and coal mining.
Since 1996, Southern Research has conducted a variety of research projects related to the identification and characterization of methane emissions as well as the development and evaluation of methane emission reduction measures and technologies. Specifically, we have broad experience in evaluating the performance and impacts of technologies in the oil and gas sector and the waste management sector, including: landfill gas; animal waste-to-energy; wastewater treatment; biogas; digester gas; gas cleanup systems; and electric power generation using biogas.
