Catalysts

Southern Research offers diverse catalyst research capabilities that include the ability to manufacture several different types of catalysts relevant to the power industry and environmental sectors. These catalyst types include: Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalysts for NO_x reduction in power generating plants; catalysts for the purpose of eliminating destructive gasification byproducts, such as H₂S, NH₃, and tars; Fischer-Tropsch and other syngas reforming catalysts; water-gas shift catalysts; and other types of industrial catalysts. In addition to providing extensive catalyst-development capabilities, Southern Research offers significant catalyst characterization capabilities.

Our state-of-the-art catalyst testing facilities include: the Catalyst Test and Development Facility for custom catalyst development; the Micro-Reactor SCR Catalyst Testing Facility; and the planned Bench-Scale SCR Catalyst Testing Facility. These advanced facilities are utilized for the following diverse testing: SCR catalysts for deNO_x, mercury oxidation, and SO₂ to SO₃ conversion; other catalysts, sorbents, and reagents for catalytic activity, reactivity, and poisoning; and to elucidate fundamental chemical reactions. In addition, our leading-edge Catalyst Development Laboratory offers the capability to manufacture a wide variety of catalysts for both fundamental and applied research and demonstrations. Experienced Southern Research scientists and engineers also utilize our advanced laboratory for catalyst characterization.

Membranes

Southern Research scientists and engineers have developed a novel membrane-system concept to improve the economic and technical viability of coal gasification for H₂ production and carbon sequestration and/or conversion to other valuable products. This innovative membrane system eliminates the need for several separate unit operations and the associated capital equipment costs. Features of this advanced system include: syngas polishing; high-temperature secondary water-gas shift reaction; hydrogen separation; and high-pressure CO₂ generation.
